The US water supply systems may have been subjected to the largest coordinated cyber attacks in history: according to federal agencies, the sabotage affected at least 12 states and led to disruptions in the work of more than 150 municipal engineering structures. American experts suspect Iranian hackers, but do not provide any evidence in favor of this version. US President Donald Trump denies Iranian interference — in his opinion, negligent Democratic governors are to blame for everything.
Problems with the operation of water supply and wastewater treatment systems in several American states have been going on for a week. On August 6, the media reported that disruptions were detected in at least 12 states, while experts do not rule out that not all data has yet been communicated to the FBI and the Environmental Protection Agency. Minnesota was the most affected, where more than 300 municipal engineering structures were disrupted. The FBI reported that the problems are related to massive coordinated cyber attacks. It was because of computer sabotage that the remote control systems for water supply nodes allegedly stopped working, and the pressure level in the water supply network dropped in a number of states, while flooding occurred in others. Due to the risks of untreated groundwater entering the pipeline, authorities advised residents to boil the water before drinking. […]
"Life support systems, which certainly include water supply systems, especially in large cities and industrial facilities, are critical infrastructure," Andrey Kulpin, the Executive director of KOMIB (Center for Coordination of Public-Private Partnership in the Field of International Information Security) explained to Kommersant.— It is difficult to remotely assess the real level of security of specific facilities or industries. Nevertheless, given the high level of digitalization and automation of such facilities, the risks of information security are real and very high, including physical damage to equipment and weeks of downtime." According to him, the stability of the functioning of such enterprises is influenced by many factors, such as the implemented security tools, the processes of cybersecurity organization system, and the availability of a qualified information security service.
